Albums

Before Toto was formed the members of the group did sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all performed on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to formation of Toto in 1976.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album, was criticized by critics for not having hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen resigned the group, and they held auditions to find a replacement frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the 1986 album Fahrenheit.
In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by going through several demos and tapes from the past to release a special edition called Toto XX. The album was well received by fans and the band embarked on a tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.
While touring for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar quit the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included recordings from the tour and also an interview with the group.

David Hungate, the drummer was also let go after the tour. Leland Sklar replaced him.

Toto has produced many music videos. The band has released a variety of compilation videos and DVDs. The most popular video for the band is "Africa" which has more than a billion views on YouTube. The video is set in a library, where the band performs on top of a stack of African books.
The song "Africa" is from the album Toto IV. The song was written by members of the band and was produced by David Paich. It was a huge hit in Europe and a variety of other countries. The success of the single helped Toto to regain their popularity, after their previous album Turn Back failed to chart in America.
Toto embarked on a worldwide tour following the release of their album. The group included touring musicians Lenny Castro and Shannon Forrest. Warren Ham, Shem von Schröeck, and Shem von Schroeck were also in the group. In addition guitarist Steve Lukather released his second solo album, Luke.
In 1985, drummer Fergie Frederiksen resigned from Toto due to personal reasons. The group decided to hold an audition, and eventually chose Joseph Williams to replace Frederiksen.
Prior to and during the creation of Toto its members, they did sessions for various artists. Toto was formed after Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and Boz Scaggs recorded Silk Degrees. Keyboardist Paich was regular on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
In 1998, Toto started working on the project titled Old Is New. The album featured three new tracks as well as a number of finished recordings of older songs. The album was a global success and the band toured on tour to promote the album.

The album debuted on November 6, 2018, and included three brand new tracks from the forthcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun, and also completed recordings of four older tracks with Jeff Porcaro on drums and either Mike or Steve Porcaro on bass. The album included a cover version of Weezer’s track "Hash Pipe," which the band re-released after hearing it on the radio.
